If anything has characterised Western peoples, it is their interest and curiosity about Asian culture. Japan, then, becomes the focus of historians and artists who seek to understand a little more about this great civilisation.

Palau Martorell hosts an immense exhibition on Japanese art in its galleries for an entire season. Until September, you will have the opportunity to appreciate around 200 works from this culture, such as ukiyo-e prints, period photographs, ancient samurai armour, netsuke, kimonos, calligraphy, fans, among other items. You will be able to appreciate everything from the best-known images of the Japanese people, such as geishas and samurai, to historical information that will take you to nineteenth-century Japan.
The exhibition is divided into six sections: Theatre; Geisha; Shunga, the images of spring; Netsuke, kakemono and period photographs; War culture; Samurai.
The exhibition tour begins with the Theatre section, which presents the history of ukiyo-ek, a relief printing technique dating from the Han era (206 BC – 220 AD). This technique was carried out by several artists and most works depicted scenes from Nō theatre, a term encompassing Japan’s classical theatre. The Geisha section tells some of the story of these dancers or performers, often considered prostitutes. Shunga shows a refined selection of erotic art, which played a leading role in Japan during those times. The netsuke and kakemono section exhibits these unique pieces from this culture, which were used to hang or store accessories due to the lack of pockets in kimonos; it also highlights the photography that remained as testimony to these techniques. War culture presents the Musha, who was a tribal warrior who would evolve into the samurai. Finally, the Samurai section will show the armour that gave greater agility to these legendary warriors.
