During La Mercè 2026, Carmina Burana leaves the Gran Teatre del Liceu to meet the public in Nou Barris. Carl Orff’s celebrated work is presented in an intimate format that concentrates its power in the voices, two pianos and percussion.

The Coro del Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Grupo de Percusión del Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Amics de la Unió children’s choir take part. The adaptation retains the cantata’s forceful character, while making it possible to hear its rhythms and contrasts from an unusual distance.
Composed in 1936 from medieval poems written in Latin, Old German and Occitan, Carmina Burana speaks of fortune, love, desire and the pleasures of life. Its best-known excerpt, O Fortuna, opens and closes the work with one of the most recognisable choruses in 20th-century music.
The La Mercè’26 concert thus offers another way to approach this classic: less monumental in scale, but with the voices and rhythm at the heart of the experience.
