«The folclórica of the twenty-first century» contest

Madrid will host a contest that proposes reinventing the figure of the folclórica, the artist around whom Spanish open-air dances, songs and summer squares once revolved.

The project «The folclórica of the twenty-first century» will take the form of urban outdoor evenings with music, performances and a contemporary version of the traditional verbena. The first event will take place at Cine de Verano de la Bombilla; afterwards, the programme will continue in other cities in the region and the final will return to Madrid.

The participants will reinterpret the figure of the folclórica through their stage presence, voice and their own style. Rather than trying to reproduce the past, the organisers propose imagining how this figure might sound today, beyond nostalgia and the museum format.

The jury will consist of representatives of the Spanish cultural scene, researchers of popular music and authors of projects on copla and urban culture. In addition to the competition, the evenings will serve as large street parties with music, conversations and the atmosphere of a summer square, something gradually disappearing from urban life.
