La Melonera Race
On 6 September, the XXXV La Melonera Race will take place, running through Madrid Río and, as tradition dictates, welcoming participants at the finish with a slice of Villaconejos melon, reviving the custom of handing out this fruit during festivities beside the chapel of the Virgen del Puerto.
About this event
As Arganzuela celebrates «La Melonera», a festival named after the melons that were once offered to participants in the old procession by the chapel of the Virgen del Puerto, the tradition continues in the form of a race as well. On 6 September at 9:00, the XXXV Carrera La Melonera TRIBOOST Arganzuela will take place, whose finish line preserves another of the festival’s customs: runners receive not a medal, but a slice of Villaconejos melon, as was once done in the meadows beside the river.
Participants can choose between 5 and 10 km distances, both with a single-lap route through Madrid Río. For younger runners, born between 2013 and 2022, there will be children’s races on Guillermo de Osma street. There are only 800 places and registration is online for 2 euros; if places remain available, they can be filled on race day itself.
