The Day of the Virgin of Almudena

Every November, Madrid pays tribute to its patron saint, the Virgin of Almudena. In the days before the main celebration, the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena holds a triduum, three days of worship in her honour.

On 9 November, the city is immersed in a festive atmosphere. The main mass is held in Plaza de la Almudena, after which the image of the Virgin is taken in a colourful procession to Plaza Mayor and back. Along the way, residents and visitors encounter floral offerings, classical concert music and impressive dance performances.

The sweet Madrid tradition attracts particular attention. Local pastry shops prepare the famous Corona de la Almudena, a dessert that symbolises the celebration and is available to anyone who wishes to try it. At the same time, Madrid City Council organises various activities: from dance masterclasses to tastings and festive performances in the square.

This day brings believers and tourists together, turning central Madrid into true Christmas magic even before winter arrives. Everyone can get closer to the traditions, enjoy the art and savour the authentic Madrid celebration.
