Grand Medieval Fair

At the beginning of May, El Álamo, near Madrid, changes its usual appearance and for a few days becomes the setting for a medieval festival with a market, shows and street parades.

The urban space fills with market stalls and stages. Participants in historical costumes parade through the streets, craftspeople work, and artists' performances and small open-air theatrical productions take place.

The main focus is on jousting contests. They are held several times a day and attract most of the audience. The programme also includes fire shows, falconry, street performances and activities for children.

There is a medieval market in the festival grounds. Crafts, food and traditional items are sold here. Craftspeople show their work with wood, metal and ceramics directly on site.

At night, live music, including Celtic compositions, accompanies the tour around the festival grounds.
