Plaza Mayor Christmas Market
Every year, when Christmas arrives, Madrid’s main square is transformed into an extensive market with hundreds of stalls full of nativity figures, musical instruments, toys and novelty items. This centuries-old fair is one of the city’s most cherished traditions.
About this event
In the 17th century, stalls sold fruit, vegetables, decorations and gifts in the neighbouring Plaza de Santa Cruz. Two hundred years later, an ordinance was approved to legalise the market, making it the ideal place to find nativity figures, Christmas decorations or toys. However, if you were looking for sweets or a turkey, the option was the market in Plaza Mayor.
Today, everything related to Christmas is sold at the centuries-old Plaza Mayor market, in stalls renovated in the 1980s in the shape of small huts. In Plaza de Santa Cruz, you will find a vintage carousel that remains until the beginning of January.
