Antonio López’s panorama «View of Madrid» has been permanently installed at the National Archaeological Museum. Since last 11 February, this painting, belonging to the BBVA collection, has occupied a prominent place in Room 31, becoming a bridge between history and modernity.
Antonio López is a master of hyperrealism, turning the canvas into a window onto the past. His 1962 «View of Madrid» is not merely a landscape, but a frozen moment of urban life: the façade of a museum, the Serrano Garden and a couple kissing at the top of a tree. This unexpected touch adds a touch of magical realism to the painting.
For archaeologists, the painting is valuable not only for its accuracy, but also for its historical details: it depicts the entrance to the museum in its original form, with sphinxes and a monumental staircase. Now this corner of the past is part of the present.
