Exhibition «Stephanie Comilang. In Search of Life»
Madrid will host the first major solo exhibition by Filipino-Canadian artist Stephanie Comilang, which explores the history and relevance of large-scale maritime transport of goods.

Stephanie Comilang is a Filipino-Canadian artist and filmmaker based in Toronto and Berlin. Her work focuses on the concept of home and often addresses ideas of diaspora and migration. The Thyssen-Bornemisza invites her to immerse herself in a profound reflection on history and the connection between different forms of life in the exhibition «Stephanie Comilang. In Search of Life». The artist reinterprets nature, contextualised by colonial exploitation, as well as reflecting on rituals that may initiate new processes with a positive impact on the planet.
The exhibition focuses on the migration of both humans and animals. It is an audiovisual installation in which the sea routes used by Spain after the colonisation of the Philippines are confronted across screens. They form a film that will tell the story of today's global transport of goods by sea and the important role of Filipino seafarers. In addition to the film, textiles made from pineapple fibre will be displayed, filling the room with forms from the natural world: monarch butterflies, potato flowers, coffee, vanilla and other things imported by the Spanish.
