Sakiko Nomura exhibition “Tender Is the Night”
Fundación Mapfre presents at Sala Recoletos the first major retrospective of Japanese photographer Sakiko Nomura, “Tender Is the Night”, a master of black-and-white photography whose work breaks traditional taboos in Japanese culture.
About this event
Sakiko Nomura is known for her images of male nudes that combine eroticism, tenderness and mystery. Her photographs immerse the viewer in a mysterious, misty nocturnal atmosphere, full of shadows and restraint.
However, the exhibition goes beyond this genre, as it also includes images of deserted streets, natural landscapes, hotel rooms, fireworks and atmospheric phenomena. These images form interrupted narratives that recall cinematic scenes.
Curator Enrique Juncos emphasises the temporal and illusory motifs in Nomura’s works, which create the effect of fragments from a film that the viewer must “finish” for themselves.
