From 4 March, Museo Thyssen hosts “Proust and the Arts”, an exhibition about the role of art in the work of Marcel Proust, one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. The exhibition explores his aesthetic ideas, the influence of the landscapes and architecture around him, and the contemporary and classical artists who inspired his work. The exhibition aims to show the relationship between art, life and Proust’s work.
To understand Proust, it is important to visualise late-19th-century Paris, the cosmopolitan capital of the Third Republic, transformed by Baron Haussmann’s reforms. It was a city of electricity, automobiles, restaurants and cafés that inspired Proust with its dynamic modernity. Impressionist images of Paris became an important part of his aesthetics and influenced both his life and his work.
