Paul Durand-Ruel began his career in the art world in 1865, when he took over a gallery founded by his father. After some time, he became one of the most famous art dealers in Paris. He is known as a man who devoted his life to defending modern art against attacks from supporters of academic painting.
Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet, as well as the “Barbizon school”, were under his patronage. But his most famous undertaking was promoting Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro. Durand-Ruel’s final venture was to support and promote a new generation of artists. These were artists working in the context of Impressionism. Traditionally, they are referred to as the “Post-Impressionist generation”, although different trends can be identified.
The exhibition Paul Durand-Ruel and the Last Glimmers of Impressionism aims to recall the great patron once again and highlight the work of five Post-Impressionist artists.
