Exhibition “Once Again... (Statues Never Die)”

From 10 February to 29 March, the Pórtico room at Museo Lázaro Galdiano hosts for the first time in Spain the video installation by British artist and director Isaac Julien. The work explores the influence of African art on the European avant-garde of the early 20th century and raises the question of returning works expropriated by colonial powers.

Archive materials and artistic reconstructions come to life on two screens, including imaginary dialogues between philosopher Alain Locke and collector Albert Barnes. The installation brings together the Harlem Renaissance, the queer culture of the Black community and the influence of African art in Western museums, creating a sense of living historical and cultural dialogue.

The exhibition is accompanied by screenings of Julien’s films “Looking for Langston” and “Les Statues Meurent Aussi”, and on 7 March there will be a discussion with the artist himself and the curators.
