Exhibition «Néstor rediscovered»

Until 8 September, Museo Reina Sofía hosts the exhibition «Néstor rediscovered», a unique opportunity to rediscover Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, a Canarian artist who challenged the aesthetic and moral norms of his time. More than a hundred works, including paintings, murals, theatre sketches and costumes, leave the Canary Islands for the first time to tell the story of an author who moved with ease between Modernism, Symbolism and Decadentism.

Known simply as Néstor, he was born in Las Palmas in 1887 and, from his youth, was part of Barcelona’s avant-garde circles, where he made his debut at Círculo Ecuestre. He later settled in Madrid, where he came into contact with Lorca, Dalí and Valle-Inclán, travelled to Europe’s cultural capitals and drew inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelites, Whistler and von Stuck. His art—bold, sophisticated and sensual—feels especially current.

The exhibition «Néstor rediscovered», presented at Museo Reina Sofía, returns to the scene a forgotten Canarian artist whose work comes back to life outside his native archipelago.
