About this event
The Museo Nacional del Prado, the Galería de las Colecciones Reales and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando are opening the unique exhibition «Nel segno del genio. Velázquez in the documents». For the first time, three manuscripts will be presented that offer a new perspective on the life and work of Velázquez, highlighting his role as a cultural mediator between Spain and Italy during the Siglo de Oro.
The documents from the Archivo Romano concern the artist’s second journey to Rome, during which he commissioned bronze copies of ancient sculptures. These texts, which include contracts with craftspeople, will make it possible to learn about the brilliant artist’s workshop and understand his influence on the development of the art of the period.
