«Modern Mythologies: Ouka Leele & Co» exhibition

Sala Alcalá 31 invites visitors to rediscover the art of Madrid’s Movida from an unusual perspective. Until 18 October, the venue hosts «Modern Mythologies: Ouka Leele & Co», an exhibition exploring how some of the most influential artists of the 1980s reinterpreted classical myths to speak about a society undergoing profound transformation.

The exhibition brings together more than one hundred works by figures such as Ouka Leele, Ceesepe, El Hortelano, Costus, Carlos Franco and Guillermo Pérez Villalta. Photographs, paintings, drawings and pieces in different formats trace a decisive period for Madrid culture, in which artistic experimentation, popular culture and references to the classical tradition coexisted.

The route begins with the emblematic intervention «Rapelle toi, Barbara!», created by Ouka Leele at the Cibeles fountain in 1987, to show how mythological imagery became a creative tool through which a whole generation of artists reinterpreted Madrid during the Transition.
