«Matisse Metamorphosis. Sculptures and Drawings» exhibition

Following its success in Switzerland and France, an exhibition dedicated to the artist, with more than 30 works, arrives in Madrid.

Henri Matisse is a celebrated French artist known for more than his drawings. «Matisse: Metamorphosis. Sculptures and Drawings» will reveal a new facet of this talented man: sculpture. In his works, he turns and brings to the foreground the human figure and its evolution.

The exhibition presents an updated selection of works to tell the story of the artist’s journey from figurative academicism to abstraction. We will see 33 sculptures, drawings, lithographs and a canvas by Matisse, as well as two other sculptures by Aristide Maillol, photographs and documents from the period. There will be five sections in all, corresponding to the motifs and poses the artist constantly explored throughout his career: crouching figures, reclining figures, figures with raised arms, portraits, and motifs and variations.
