«Matadero, 100 years» exhibition

Today, it is one of the most popular centres of contemporary creativity. It was founded in 1924 as a municipal slaughterhouse and livestock market. Today, it has a new life and is one of the best-preserved examples of this model of administrative city in Europe.

To celebrate its centenary, the space has prepared a wide programme of free events: exhibitions, round tables, commemorative concerts, workshops and film screenings.

One of the highlights of the programme will be the former cold-storage chamber, now known as Nave 0, which will be a window onto the past and the entire history of the municipal slaughterhouse. Another important exhibition is Construir la Casa del Lector, which tells us about the most important stages of the project within Reading, in whose renovation architecture, design and interior design were combined.

The round tables will feature fascinating talks and meetings with architects who transformed an industrial complex into a contemporary cultural space. Seminars will also be held with representatives of local culture.

Of course, such a significant occasion cannot do without music. For this reason, DJ sessions, concerts and a performance by the Creative Music School are expected.

As one of the most important film libraries, Matadero will present a selection of films that have used Matadero locations. They will delight us with a selection of great classics and discussions with important figures from the world of cinema.

A festive plan has also been organised for the youngest visitors. There will be an illustrated activity prepared by visual artist Daniela Martagon, so that children and adults can imagine and explore Matadero’s architectural complex. For younger children, there will be a workshop where they can discover, analyse and explore the history of the area through drawings and experiences, and recognise spaces through dance. In addition, the «Creative Bricks» workshop invites children to analyse an important element: the brick.
