Exhibition ‘Maruja Mallo. Mask and Compass’
Madrid is preparing to rediscover one of the 20th century’s most brilliant and transgressive artists. From 8 October, the Museo Reina Sofía will open ‘Maruja Mallo. Máscara y compás’, the most extensive exhibition ever dedicated to the Galician painter. The display brings together around 90 pieces, including paintings, drawings, documents and audiovisual material, and can be visited until 16 March 2026.
About this event
The exhibition offers a chronological journey tracing Mallo’s development from her early steps in Galicia and Asturias, through her consolidation as an essential figure of the Generation of ’27, to her subsequent exile in Argentina. Emblematic works such as La verbena (1927), Canto de las espigas and the Religión del trabajo series reveal both her surrealist spirit and her social and feminist outlook. Mallo was not only one of the great artists of the Sinsombrero group, those creators who broke with established moulds; she also embodied a way of painting ‘as a woman’, exploring the themes of her time from a critical and modern perspective.
Tickets for ‘Maruja Mallo. Máscara y compás’ are not sold separately: it is enough to purchase the museum’s general admission ticket. This event at the Reina Sofía is not only an exhibition, but a historic opportunity to get to know in depth an artist who, through her work, lit the way towards freer, braver and more committed art.
