For abstractionists, colour is not merely an element of composition, but the foundation of their work, setting the rhythm and structure of their pieces. Fundación Juan March's new exhibition You Have to See It. The Autonomy of Colour in Abstract Art invites you to immerse yourself in a fascinating exploration of colour in abstract art, encompassing works by artists from the 20th and 21st centuries across the five continents.
The project reveals the diversity of colour perception in different civilisations, the evolution of natural and synthetic pigments and their relationship with discoveries in physics and optics. It is not merely an exhibition of paintings, but a journey through the history of colour, its symbolism and the scientific discoveries that have influenced art.
Special attention is paid to 18th- and 19th-century theories that laid the foundations for the idea of the autonomy of colour, that is, the understanding of colour as an independent expressive medium. The theoretical work of Goethe, Chevreul and other researchers laid the foundations for modern ideas about colour and its importance in abstract art.
