«Iconography of Evil. Tapestries of the Seven Deadly Sins» exhibition
The Gallery of Royal Collections presents «Iconography of Evil. Tapestries of the Seven Deadly Sins», a unique exhibition that brings together, for the first time, two extraordinary series of 16th-century Flemish tapestries devoted to the seven deadly sins: wrath, gluttony, pride, lust, sloth, envy and greed. Masterpieces of European textile art that, until now, had only been seen by a few.
About this event
Woven in the Netherlands for Queen Mary of Hungary and later in the hands of Philip II, these tapestries represent a powerful allegory of vice and the human condition. With rich and complex iconography, they were conceived not only as decorative pieces but as visual discourses on morality and power.
The exhibition can be visited from 25 June to 28 September, as part of the Gallery’s second anniversary, which it celebrates with an extensive cultural programme: lectures, special tours, cinema, dance and music, designed to broaden the visitor experience and connect the past with the present.
