“Icónica Madrid. A storybook city” exhibition

Espacio Cultural Serrería Belga shows how artists perceive Madrid’s visual code, not through tourist images but through personal and often unexpected symbols. The project brings together illustrations in which the city’s familiar elements take on a new interpretation.

The exhibition brings together works devoted to the capital’s landmarks and details: from Plaza Mayor and Cuesta de Moyano to the metro, theatres, gastronomy and urban customs. Each creator chooses an “iconic” image and translates it into visual language, creating an alternative map of the city.

More than a dozen illustrators with different styles and experiences take part in the project, from editorial illustration to digital and experimental techniques. They include artists well known in illustration and publishing, as well as artists working with contemporary visual formats. This selection offers a polyphonic view of the elements that make up the city’s image.

The works are presented in different formats and scales, from large panels to elements integrated into the architecture of the space. This allows the exhibition to be perceived as a single field, where individual images interact with one another and with the building itself.
