Who were they: heroes of the arena or victims of the spectacle? A new exhibition at MARPA offers a view of the gladiators of ancient Rome without myths or romanticism, through authentic objects, archaeology and history.

Until 28 September, the Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico de Madrid is hosting a major exhibition on the gladiators of ancient Rome. More than 170 original pieces, from helmets from Pompeii to works of art, reveal the true story of the gladiators, their lives, their weapons and their role in society.
The exhibition, prepared by experts from the leading museums of Spain and Italy, recreates the atmosphere of the amphitheatres and shows how film and literature have shaped the image of the gladiator, often far removed from historical truth.
