A small exhibition devoted to Il Guercino, the master whose work set the course for Baroque painting in northern Italy, is on display in the galleries of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.
The starting point is the painting «Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well», from the museum’s collection. Around it unfolds a serene, focused account of how the artist approached female figures in biblical scenes, revealing them through gesture, gaze and inner tension.
Six canvases, brought together from various European collections, including the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg, create an overall view. In these works, familiar biblical themes take on a new nuance, shifting attention towards the experiences of their female protagonists.
