Joana Vasconcelos exhibition ‘Flamboyant’

From 13 February, Madrid’s Palacio de Liria will open its doors to an exhibition by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, which will make history as she is the first artist whose work is presented in such a majestic and inhabited historic space. The project, entitled ‘Flamboyant’, will combine Vasconcelos’ contemporary installations and sculptures with works by masters such as Velázquez, Goya, Rubens and Titian.

Drawing inspiration from the palace’s history and architecture, Vasconcelos creates a dialogue between past and present. The works on display include crocheted lion figures, which provide the starting point for a journey through the palace, as well as works exploring themes such as gender, identity and consumerism. Of particular interest is the Carmen lamp, which will be installed in the library beside a historic letter by Prosper Mérimée.

This exhibition is an exceptional opportunity to see Joana Vasconcelos’ eclectic work in the context of one of the most important private art collections, with which it maintains an intriguing and dynamic dialogue.
