Joel Meyerowitz exhibition “Europe 1966-1967”

In 1966, at the age of 28, Joel Meyerowitz left a career in advertising and embarked on a year-long journey through Europe. Driving and with camera in hand, he travelled more than 30,000 kilometres, visited ten countries and took around 25,000 photographs.

For six months he stayed in Málaga, where he forged close ties with the Escalonas family, representatives of traditional flamenco. This gave rise to a unique visual chronicle of Spain under the Franco dictatorship: sincere, vivid, deeply personal. This experience profoundly influenced his style and artistic career.

The current exhibition brings together period images in colour and black and white made in England, France, Turkey, Italy and, above all, Spain. Portraits, street life and landscapes all tell the story of how one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century was formed.
