‘Elegance and Tradition. The Qipao and Haipai Culture’ exhibition

An exhibition dedicated to the female ‘Haipai Qipao’ garment and the history of Shanghai is opening in Madrid. The China Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Shanghai History Museum, presents how the city has changed and what role this elegant dress has played in women’s lives.

More than 40 qipaos, old photographs, advertising posters and other historical materials are on display in the galleries. Through them, one can appreciate the beauty of the clothing and Shanghai’s special atmosphere, its openness, energy and innovative spirit. The Haipai qipao reflects both women’s grace and inner strength, as well as the city’s cultural diversity and character.

This garment arose within ancient Chinese traditions and has since become a symbol of women’s fashion in China. From Shanghai it reached the global stage without losing its importance as part of the culture and history of the city’s style.
