«The Artist’s Universe Before the Camera» exhibition

From 13 April to 5 July, the Museo del Prado presents an exhibition on how photography became part of nineteenth-century artistic practice and gradually turned into a new way of depicting reality. The project approaches early photography not as a technical novelty, but as an autonomous instrument of visual thought.

The images, in various techniques and formats, have been brought together to show where and how the artist appeared within the frame. These include workshops as well as domestic spaces, meeting or learning places, and sometimes unexpected locations for taking photographs, including the Patio de las Doncellas of the Alcázar of Seville.

The exhibition route is structured as a sequential observation of artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
