The work was created between 1605 and 1609 and formed part of the private collection of King Felipe IV of Spain. We are incredibly fortunate to have this masterpiece in the capital. Among Caravaggio’s approximately 60 most famous works, “Ecce Homo” stands out prominently. Its status as a masterpiece was confirmed when it appeared at an auction three years ago, causing a great stir.
“Ecce Homo” depicts the historic moment when the Roman governor Poncio Pilato presented Christ to the public. This painting embodies Caravaggio’s artistic brilliance, showing a three-dimensional composition that was revolutionary for its time. The depth and realism of the scene highlight Caravaggio’s innovative approach and his mastery in the use of light and shadow, making it an essential example of his work.
