For the first time in Madrid, the Museo de la Reina Sofía presents a major exhibition by Félix González-Torres, one of the most outstanding artists in late-20th-century American art. «Sweet Revenge» brings together works in which personal memory, love, loss and political questions coexist and complement one another.
Madrid occupies a special place in the exhibition. In 1971, the artist arrived in the city after leaving Cuba as part of a programme to move children out of the country. Almost twenty years later, he returned to Madrid and presented the work «Untitled» (Revenge), made up of an accumulation of blue sweets. It was then that González-Torres described his return as a «sweet revenge».
Part of the exhibition goes beyond the limits of the museum. Works by González-Torres have appeared on advertising displays in the metro stations of Cuzco, Guzmán el Bueno, Retiro, O’Donnell, Legazpi and Tirso de Molina, bringing the exhibition into Madrid’s urban space as well.
