The low-rise houses of Vallecas come to life in Santi Vaquero’s photographs. The exhibition «Casas Bajas» takes us back to a time when the streets of this Madrid neighbourhood were full of life, struggle and neighbourly solidarity. The images, taken in the neighbourhood’s final days, are a powerful reminder of its cultural and political history.
About this event
Photographer and neighbourhood resident Santi Vaquero tells the story of the low-rise houses of Palomeras in Vallecas, a once bustling neighbourhood, full of life, struggle and unity, which disappeared beneath excavators in the early 1980s. His images, taken with a Nikon FM, take us back to the dictatorship era, when these neighbourhoods were symbols of resistance and cultural activism despite poverty and abandonment by the authorities.
The exhibition «Casas Bajas» reveals neighbourhood life: youth parties, scenes from everyday life and the painful process of demolition. It has already been presented at several cultural centres and now returns to its place of origin, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Quinta del Sordo.
The exhibition is complemented by texts from La Liminal, a collective dedicated to preserving the memory of the social struggles of Madrid’s neighbourhoods.
