The Biblioteca Nacional de España is hosting a free exhibition that showcases the legacy of pioneering feminist Carmen de Burgos.
The exhibition will trace the life of this writer from Almería, Spain's first female war correspondent, and a tireless defender of the right to divorce and women's suffrage.
Throughout her life she was a member of prestigious organisations, such as the Academia de Ciencias de Lisboa and the Sociedad Económica Matritense de Amigos del País, and she was one of the first women mentioned on the membership list of the Real Academia. She made an invaluable contribution to the formation of the Segunda República and became a significant and admired figure in Spanish literature. However, after the Guerra Civil, her books were banned. Several decades of research in archives and newspapers have been necessary to restore Carmen de Burgos to the place she deserves in our history and literature.
