Exhibition ‘Theatrical Artifices. The musical scene of the roaring twenties’

The Spanish musical scene came to prominence in the 1920s, when the artistic avant-gardes and technical development came together. Theatre became a truly astonishing spectacle, with its own sets, and reached an incredible scale.

Spain was marked by prosperity and idiosyncrasy, combined with a restless spirit. We can now savour its legacy: sketches, photographs and prints that recreate that very world.

The exhibition presents documents from the Guerrero Archive, dedicated to preserving the memory of Jacinto Guerrero, the ABC Archive, and the ABC Collection, the most important reference book on illustration and drawing of the period, whose contribution helps contextualise the phenomenon of the stage in relation to the visual arts of the time. All this presents us with an idealised reflection of an era in which theatre ceased to be a reflection of everyday life.
