On 25 November, Madrid opens the largest monographic exhibition devoted to the 18th-century German artist Antonio Rafael Mengs. It brings together around 150 works, from drawings and pastels to oils and the fresco «Jupiter and Ganymede». The exhibition makes it possible to discover Mengs’s workshop and see how he combined the classical with new ideas.
The exhibition shows how Mengs learned from the great masters of the past and created his masterpieces. His inspirations include Raphael, Correggio and Pompeo Batoni. In addition to paintings, visitors will be able to see sculptures, medals and rare manuscripts.
The exhibition is curated by leading specialists from the Prado Museum and National Heritage. Many of the works come from the Prado collections and others from European museums. The exclusive sponsor of the exhibition is the BBVA Foundation.
