The singular Alex Katz Exhibition has opened in Madrid, at the ‘López de la Serna’ contemporary art centre, and will remain open until 14 March. The exhibition of works by American artist Alex Katz immerses visitors in the world of his iconic portraits and landscapes, which have become an integral part of American culture. With bright, large-scale forms, Katz created a unique style that combines elements of abstraction and post-war realism. He succeeded in breaking away from the dominant aesthetics of his time, creating what he called a ‘wholly American’ image. His paintings are dominated by female figures and the natural landscapes of Maine, underlining the importance of these themes in his work.
Over a career spanning more than seventy years, Katz has become one of the most influential artists, whose work shapes perceptions of and interactions with the world around him. His portraits of friends and family, as well as his depictions of landscapes, have left an indelible mark on 20th- and 21st-century art. Katz’s work inspires a rethinking of art and expands the boundaries of artistic collaboration to include projects with poets, theatre and dance.
