440 Teatro Español. The oldest in Europe

Teatro Español is the oldest theatre in Europe with continuous programming. Its history dates back to the 16th century and continues uninterrupted to this day. The theatre has survived fires, attempted destruction and numerous transformations, and has witnessed Madrid’s political changes. During the Spanish Siglo de Oro, the theatre was a meeting place for many famous artists, and many premiered their works here. Adapted to modernity, the theatre has not lowered its standards.

The exhibition is based on numerous studies into the theatre’s evolution. Visitors will see documents, anecdotes and images reflecting the activities of three areas: artists, audiences and professionals. It is a great opportunity to see what Europe’s oldest theatre conceals.
