Free guided tours of the Viaje de Agua de Amaniel

In 1613, the old Alcázar stood on the site of today’s Royal Palace. That year, Philip II ordered the construction of a structure to collect groundwater and channel it through underground filtering galleries to the centre. Today, they are known as the Viaje de Agua de Amaniel. These galleries supplied drinking water to the city; however, they could not withstand the constant collapses and landslides. Throughout history, architects have attempted to preserve and restore them. Although recent restoration works have managed to recover around 50 metres, this section is known as the Viaje de Palacio.

The free tour invites you to see the three galleries, the ventilation wells, the access wells and the niches for placing lights. You will also be able to discover the Arco de la Vieja and learn the history of this treasure of the capital.
