Circus Baobab show ‘Yé! (L’Eau)’

At Madrid’s Teatro Circo Price, a show will be performed in which there is almost no boundary between circus, dance and physical theatre. Circus Baobab takes to the stage with Yé! (L’Eau).

The Guinean company builds the show around movement, risk and collective energy. During the performance, the artists lift one another into human structures several metres high, perform acrobatic flights and create scenes that constantly change the perception of the stage space.

However, Yé! does not resemble a classic circus with separate acts. Here everything unfolds as a single flow: dance gradually turns into acrobatics, tension gives way to almost complete silence and then returns to movement once again.

At the heart of the staging is the idea of mutual support and cooperation. The artists work without complex sets or visual effects, so all attention is focused on the bodies, the rhythm and the feeling of a constant balance between control and risk.

Circus Baobab emerged in Guinea at the end of the 1990s and fused African circus traditions with a contemporary stage language. Today, the company performs on international stages and, at the same time, develops educational programmes for young artists in African countries.
