Historical reenactment of 2 May

At the beginning of May, a living scene from the past unfolds in the centre of Madrid. Participants in military uniforms from the early 19th century parade through the streets. Alongside them, cavalry advances, orders are heard and blank-gun salvos ring out. The city returns to the events of 2 May 1808.

This is a historical reenactment of the popular uprising against the Napoleonic troops. It is staged by the association «Voluntarios de Madrid 1808-1814», which has been recreating episodes from that period for more than twenty years. Hundreds of reenactors, as well as horses, carriages and artillery, take part in the performance, all reproduced with historical accuracy.

The main action is concentrated in Puerta del Sol square. Here, the beginning of the uprising and the clashes between the city's inhabitants and the French troops are represented. The scenes then move through different points in the centre, forming a sequential narrative.

Part of the episodes takes place in the Puente del Rey area and along Madrid Río. Here, the reenactment is combined with a programme of concerts and other activities in the city. Additional performances are also held in other localities in the region, such as Vicálvaro and Torrejón de Ardoz.
