Musical “Moulin Rouge!”
Bohemian Paris, the cancan and fatal love: the legendary “Moulin Rouge!” leaves the big screen and comes alive on stage. Madrid will host this ten-Tony-winning Broadway musical as the inaugural show of the city’s new theatre.

The Spanish theatre scene is preparing for a much-anticipated premiere: the musical “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 cult film, will arrive on Madrid stages for the first time. The show will be presented by Stage Entertainment España, producer of hits such as “The Lion King”, “Aladdin” and “Anastasia”.

The action takes place in late-19th-century Paris, within the walls of the famous “Moulin Rouge” cabaret, a place where bohemians seek not only fun but also genuine art. At the centre of the story are Christian, a young English writer who arrives in the French capital seeking inspiration, and Satine, a cabaret star who dreams of a theatre career. Their feelings intensify in a world where luxury and misery, freedom and the power of money mingle, while their relationship is overshadowed by the threat of an influential duke determined to get what he wants at any price.
The musical will be the first show staged at the new Stage Gran Teatro Musical, currently being transformed from the former IMAX cinema. After refurbishment, the venue will hold more than 1,500 spectators and have state-of-the-art technical equipment.
The production brings together several Tony Award-winning professionals, including director Alex Timbers, librettist John Logan, musical director Justin Levine and choreographer Sonya Tayeh. The soundtrack spans more than a century of music, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga, and includes both familiar songs from the film and hits released after its premiere.
