Madrid is not Thebes, but this July it looks like it. For five performances, Teatro La Latina will be the territory of a very particular coven: that of «Las Bingueras de Eurípides», a free, streetwise and foul-mouthed version of the classical tragedy, presented by the Andalusian company Las Niñas de Cádiz. The show will run from 9 to 13 July 2025.
The production directed by José Troncoso seeks neither solemnity nor reverence for the ancient text. Here, the protagonists are working-class women who take refuge every afternoon in a clandestine bingo hall. What begins as routine ends up becoming ritual. There is no tragic chorus or Greek mask, but there are peals of laughter, shared codes and a starkly human view of everyday life. Tragedy, if it appears, comes wrapped in jokes, folklore and a spirited matriarchy.
Far from easy parody, the play uses classical references to talk about what really matters: friendship, existential weariness, the right to let off steam. And it does so with a blend of tenderness and cheek that is not seen every day on the Madrid stage.
