La Magia de la Zarzuela Festival

Under the slogan ‘The emotion of always, now at the Albéniz’, the proposal brings together some of the most recognisable scenes of popular Madrid. The programme begins with Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente, the entertaining story of Asia and Doña Simona, two women trying to make ends meet amid financial hardship and romantic aspirations in the height of the Madrid summer.

It will be followed by La del manojo de rosas, considered one of the great jewels of twentieth-century zarzuela. Set in 1930s Madrid, the work combines romance, social criticism and unforgettable characters, with Ascensión as a symbol of independence and working-class pride.

The cycle will conclude with La Revoltosa, a vibrant lyrical farce set in a traditional tenement courtyard where jealousy, rumours and love intertwine around the charismatic Mari Pepa.

Promoted by DRAO Producciones and the Compañía Clásicos de la Lírica, this event demonstrates that zarzuela remains a living reflection of Spanish cultural identity. A journey to the heart of the most authentic Madrid, where every romanza and every dialogue continue to resonate with today’s audiences.
