From 28 May to 14 June, a new version of Lope de Vega's comedy, directed by José María Mestre, will premiere at the Sala Verde of Teatros del Canal in Madrid.
The play has been created as part of the Festival of Hispanic-American Theatre of the Golden Age, with the support of the Community of Madrid.
The action is moved to 16th-century Spain, a setting where social norms set almost the entire rhythm of life. Two sisters, Finea and Nisa, try to survive in different ways in this world: one hides behind a mask of simplicity, while the other seeks freedom in writing and words. Their balance breaks when love, common to them both, enters the scene.
From there, the plot revolves around Laurencio and Liceo, whose decisions trigger a chain of unexpected choices and changes in their emotional bonds. Relationships between the characters constantly change and, with them, so do their perceptions of themselves and others.
Little by little, the story becomes a game of mirrors, where feelings and roles are exchanged, and the usual masks begin to crack under the pressure of desire, jealousy and sudden honesty.
