«Kamishibai storytelling» show

Kamishibai is a unique show. It combines Japanese graphics with stories, numerous legends and surprising traditions.

It is an unrepeatable performance. Kamishibai originated in Buddhist temples in Japan as far back as the 12th century. Monks used emaki, special scrolls combining images and text, to teach moral lessons to illiterate audiences. This wonderful method existed for several centuries. It was revived in the 1920s and 1940s. At that time, it became a way for unemployed people to earn money. It is difficult to say what enabled the method to survive for so many years. Perhaps it is due to kyokan, the feelings shared by the audience and performer in relation to the story being told.

Now we too can enjoy this oral tradition of Japan under the direction of Magda Labargue. She is an oral storyteller who runs theatre and oral storytelling workshops.
