Real Ballet de Suecia «Julieta y Romeo» show

From 7 to 10 May, the Real Ballet de Suecia will take to the Teatro Real stage with a version of Shakespeare’s story choreographed by Mats Ek.

Created in 2013 for the company’s anniversary, the production focuses attention on Julieta: the story unfolds through her inner impulse, her doubts and her determination. Instead of Sergei Prokofiev’s score, the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky will be heard, softer and more lyrical, with room for pauses and breathing.

There is minimal scenery on stage: the lighting and restrained costumes create a cold, almost empty space, where every movement is perceived in the foreground. There is no balcony or swords, only two teenagers and the world of adult rules, which gradually closes in around them.
