Show ‘Humo’
At Centro Danza Matadero, the forgotten world of the cigarreras comes to life, where movement becomes voice and dance becomes a story of struggle and freedom.

From 16 to 19 April, Centro Danza Matadero will host the premiere of ‘Humo’, a work by Rafaela Carrasco, winner of the Premio Nacional de Danza 2023. The work is dedicated to the cigarreras, working-class women of the nineteenth century who left an indelible mark on the history and culture of Spain.
The work immerses the viewer in the world of factories, where the women’s work, celebrations, secret rites and personal dramas come to life through flamenco. The choreography, dramaturgy and texts by Álvaro Tato, together with live music by Manuel Escorihuela and Paola Álvarez, create a space in which movement becomes language and voice and body become instruments of power and freedom.
‘Humo’ tells of the struggle for survival, family obligations, solidarity and female independence, combining collective power and individual expression.
