«Historia de una escalera» performance

Seventy-five years after its premiere at Teatro Español, Antonio Buero Vallejo’s Historia de una escalera returns to the stage under the direction of Helena Pimenta. Winner of the Madrid City Council’s Lope de Vega Prize in 1949, this work became not only a landmark of Spanish drama, but also an enduring milestone in theatre history.

The staircase is the silent yet expressive protagonist which, like a mirror, reflects the changes that take place in the lives of its inhabitants. On its steps lie the destinies of ordinary people who, despite desperately struggling against a society full of disappointments and injustices, remain faithful to their dreams. The plot unfolds through three crucial moments in history: the spring of 1919, the autumn of 1929 and the winter of 1949. Each of these episodes is not only a snapshot of the past, but also a reflection of our time, in which we can see not only eternal problems, but also deep human feelings that, three quarters of a century later, remain alive and relevant.
