At the Teatro Español, «Hamlet» is presented before the audience alone: without a crown, without an entourage and without tragic pathos, but with a microphone and the right to argue with Shakespeare himself.

Until 21 June, the Margarita Xirgu room at the Teatro Español hosts Sergi Belbel’s work: an unusual reading of the first act of Shakespeare’s «Hamlet», in which the classic text becomes a contemporary comic monologue.
On stage, there is a single actor: Enric Cambray. He remains alone before the audience and literally “takes apart” Shakespeare’s tragedy aloud: he recounts, comments on and relives the first act, alternating analysis, irony and the format of a comic monologue.
The project arose from an idea that Belbel and Cambray discussed together: the actor had long wanted to play the Prince of Denmark, and this staging became a way of doing so outside traditional performance. The result is a work in which Shakespeare is not declaimed, but reinterpreted: with lightness, liveliness and just enough distance to discover something new in him.
On 12 June there will be a performance with adapted access: audio description, subtitles, a hearing loop and amplified sound will be provided. Spectators using subtitles are advised to choose seats from the 5th row onwards.
