History can sound surprisingly current when told in a satirical key. That is precisely the proposal of the new Madrid staging of one of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán’s most famous works.

Until 26 July, the Sala Margarita Xirgu at Teatro Español hosts «Farsa y licencia de la reina castiza», directed by Ana Zamora. The work is based on Ramón María del Valle-Inclán’s classic dedicated to the court of Queen Isabel II and Spanish society in the 19th century.
The story transports the public to a Madrid where political life, the monarchy and everyday life become a succession of grotesque scenes. Through irony, exaggeration and the characteristic style of the esperpento, the work portrays a world in which power, hypocrisy and absurdity form part of everyday reality.
The new staging preserves the satirical spirit of the original, but offers a contemporary reading. Thanks to an expressive stage proposal, a dynamic rhythm and powerful visual imagery, the work becomes not only an account of the past, but also a reflection on how little society and power sometimes change.
