Opera «El gato montés»
El gato montés returns to the stage in a new production that rediscovers one of the great titles of the Spanish lyric repertoire. From 10 to 28 June, Teatro de la Zarzuela hosts the vision of acclaimed German director Christof Loy, who transforms Manuel Penella’s celebrated work into an intense opera in three acts marked by passion, jealousy and fate.

Set in rural Andalusia, the story revolves around Juanillo, known as «El gato montés», an outlaw who lives beyond the law and carries an impossible obsession with Soleá. When she gives her heart to Rafael, a bullfighter admired by all, a conflict is born in which love, pride and rivalry move inevitably towards tragedy.
The score combines the dramatic force of Italian verismo with the melodic richness of Spanish folklore. Fandangos, saetas, pasodobles and the unforgettable jota Todas las mañanitas accompany a narrative of great emotional intensity that has won audiences over since its premiere in 1916.
Loy’s production opts for a contemporary reading that highlights the characters’ human dimension and the power of a story in which feelings overflow every limit. With the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, the Coro del Teatro de la Zarzuela and an outstanding cast of performers, El gato montés once again shows why it remains one of the most passionate and representative works of Spanish lyric theatre.
